Q: You think I should also buy the four synchro's and keep the unused ones in stock? A: If you want to keep the car for a very long time, this is advisable. The alternative is to buy a good used gearbox. Q: So the easiest would be to replace all clutch parts with new ones and then have the old disc reconditioned and the pressure plate tested. A: Yes. Q: Do the clutch discs for S1 coupe and berlina have different outside diameters? A: Correct. Q: I heard that on S1 cars there are two different types of release bearings. One with 35 mm and one with 45 mm inner diameter. A: Correct. Q: Do we have the possibility of establishing with certainty, what parts the '67 coupe rallye and the '68 GT need from the documentation? A: Unfortunately not. The reason is that the clutch size and specifications were changed several times during production since the early ones were too weak. To establish part suitability is necessary to have the technical update sheets which Lancia released from time to time linking the new clutches to the chassis numbers. I don't have that information. I know that for instance they changed not only the diameter of the clucthes but also the number and type of springs. This is why the safest method is to pull the clutch out first and then to order the parts. Q: The procedure I have in mind, is to take the gearbox off at the hobbyclub and leave the car there so that my garage is free for the gearbox job. A: You need good light, pen and paper to draw detailed schemes on how all the bits are assembled together, lots of plastic bags to put various parts together, self-adhesive labels to label the bags, and a good set of gearbox oil gaskets. Take your time otherwise you will have to do it again. Q: It means the whole job has to be done within a week. Is that realistic? A: Rebuilding the gearbox can probably take one day only. The issue is to have all the right parts ready and whether you need accessory work. Suppose that you find the flywheel scored. Then you have to take it to a machine shop, that is extra time. I think you should plan the work without rigid time limits even if I expect it to take 4 full days. One to take it out, one to dismantle it, one to rebuild it and one to put it back. Time to fetch spares is included in the 4 days. |
