Concerning the question of your S1 Fulvia coupe sitting too low at the front, first I assume that you have excluded non-standard modifications of the suspensions, that the tyres and the wheels are of the correct size and that there was no accident damage. The most likely cause is then a tired transverse leaf spring. According to the data book for the S1 coupe the unloaded spring height must be 131 mm measured from the tip of the longest leaf to the center of the same leaf. Obviously this measure can only be obtained after removing the leaf spring from the car. Further indication can be obtained from measuring (on the car) the distance between the tip of the rubber bump stop (the oblong rubber piece against which the suspension moves upwards) and the top surface of the suspension top balljoint. For your car model it should be 30-35 mm under static (normal) load. Obviously you cannot jack up the car to measure but you should put the car levelled on a hydraulic ramp.

Q: I have been measuring the old front leaf spring and am coming up with different measurements than what you mentioned. If I measure from the top of the curve of the longest leaf to an imaginary straight line across the bottom, I come up with a measure of 155 mm.

A: The leaf spring value was taken from the official Lancia databook. I have not got a spring here to check it out. Send me the car type number and I shall double check it. In practice, you would measure it by turning the spring upside down and laying upright on a flat surface. Then you take the distance from the flat surface to the longest leaf (which is now looking downwards as the spring is upside down). I hope I explained it clearly.

Q: How do I fabricate a homemade tool to lock the front leaf spring once I raise it with a column jack. I have been looking for something to use and have yet to find a solution.

A: To block in place the front leaf spring you can fabricate an U-shape bracket (I used Dexion frame material for that; it looks like giant Mecano segments) and a suitably long rod/bolt/stud which you slide from one leg of the bracket to the other one.
