Due to cylinder head not being perpendicular to bore you need a very accurate angle plate to bore the block. Many people hone the block which does not result in a true bore. Omicron Engineering has angle plates for both 1300 and 1600 and can organise rebores. Also check to make sure that both head and block are flat. I agree that reboring can only be done by very experienced machine shops. Curiously though I found that reboring is often unnecessary since blocks are very strong and long lasting. 1600 engines can suffer from cracked blocks due to lack of anti-freeze in water. This is hard to repair well and new blocks are hard to find. Sound advice particularly since draining the coolant via the bottom stop cock will not fully drain the coolant from the engine. Coolant must be renewed every two years and its strength checked regularly. Do not strip the treads of the stopcocks (a frequent problem!). |
